Music NL: Culture Business Workshop: Oct. 16-17

A 2-day workshop, entitled “Culture as Business”, that will be presented in a dozen locations across Canada in 2010-2011, including St. John’s on the weekend of October 16-17.

The workshop is for artists, musicians, writers, actors, dancers, and anyone else looking to make a living in the cultural sector. Please pass this information along to students, colleagues, or others who may be interested.

Items covered include:

Career options & lifestyle implications

The economics of culture

Hard skills (Finance, Budgeting, Accounting, Taxes)

Soft skills (Contracts, Copyright/IP, Negotiation, Marketing & Promotion, Professional Communication)

Long-term planning (Statistical Resources, Market Research, Strategic Planning)

By the end of the weekend, participants will have the beginnings of a comprehensive business plan, something that they can literally take to the bank.

MusicNL/FACTOR Monday Open Mic. Expressions of Interest Required

Music Newfoundland & Labrador is excited to announce the launch of “MusicNL/FACTOR Monday Open Mic” a weekly songsmith stage from 8:00 to 11:00 every Monday night starting September 6th, 2010. By all means drop by and share a few of your songs and network with other songwriters and musicians.

Each Monday a singer-songwriter will host the evening’s festivities with ample time allotted for guests. Please contact Jerry Stamp kingnancy21@hotmail.com if you are interested in hosting a night.

There will be no cover but we will have a collection jar to help cover the week to week costs of the event.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Education Coordinator is responsible for the development, coordination and execution of the WJB music education and mentoring program. Must possess a passion for music education in the community and utilize innovative ways to bring WJB to the forefront. This position requires a motivated, independent, and out-going person with the flexibility to work evenings and weekends, as well as the ability to work under pressure.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.A. in Music, B. Mus., B.Ed., B. Mus. Ed, or relevant experience
  • Must be self motivated and posses the ability to motivate others
  • Must display strong initiative and be able to work with minimum supervision

2010 Music & Image One-on-One Meetings – Call for Submissions

International music industry professionals and buyers will travel from across Canada and the USA to take part in this year’s Music & Image One-on-One Meetings. Export-ready artists, artist managers and representatives are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to meet with high-profile film, TV and new media industry professionals. These 15 minute sessions have been crafted to allow export-ready artist and representatives face-to-face meetings with these industry players, including buyers, music supervisors and publishers.  There will also be scheduled networking events and mixers arranged to facilitate the development of contacts and building of relationships between the film and music industries.

Detailed information on each delegate (biographies and photos) as well as the Music & Image One-on-One Meetings Online Request Form is now available – CLICK HERE.

One-on-One Meetings take place Friday, September 17th, 10:00 am – 11:30 am and 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm. All meetings will take place at The Sonic Temple, 1674 Hollis Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Deadline for meeting submission is Thursday, September 2nd by 5:00 pm.

The Music & Image One-on-One Meetings are open to registered delegates of the Atlantic Film Festival or Music & Image Program at the 30th Atlantic Film Festival. Pre-registration is required. Criteria: Open to export-ready artists, managers, artist representatives, composers, labels and companies.

  • must have professional press kit/bio/web presence (own website, myspace etc.)
  • must have released at least one professionally manufactured CD
  • must have professional marketing plan/ business plan
  • must have attended an Export Readiness Training Workshop / exporting experience

*Participants will be requested to check in 10 minutes prior to their first pre-scheduled one-on-one meeting.

**Please review all delegate bios/background information thoroughly before requesting your one-on-one meetings (maximum 8 meetings per artist/representative) to ensure you choose those who are a “good fit” for your genre of music and reflect your career goals.
