The Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) is seeking a dynamic President to manage the affairs of the association and to oversee its operations in the rapidly evolving and changing environment that faces today’s music and recording industry.
The Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) is the national trade association representing the English‐language,
Canadian‐owned sector of the music industry.
CIMA’s mandate is to secure a strong and economically stable Canadian independent music and sound recording industry. Our
membership consists of more than 160 Canadian‐owned record labels, managers, distributors and professionals involved in
every aspect of the Canadian music industry.
CIMA’s leadership over the past 30 years has resulted in the creation of policy, funding support and trade initiatives which have
greatly benefited the independent music sector.
I. Helps define and create strategic goals for CIMA.
II. Ensures that policy and strategic direction approved by the Board is effectively executed. The President
provides timely and accurate reports to Board, supports Board committees, organizes Board meetings and
the Annual Meeting, assists in ensuring that the Board and Association act within its By‐Laws, and works
with the Board’s Executive Committee on the Association’s operations.
III. Recommends yearly budget for Board approval, implements budgets and initiatives approved by the
Board and prudently manages organization’s resources within these budget guidelines.
IV. Oversees and works with key staff and contractors to ensure that events and projects occur as projected
and works with a variety of funders to ensure that appropriate events and projects continue to take place.
Works to extend and develop the Canadian Blast showcasing brand both in Canada and in export markets.
V. Maintains effective relationships with CIMA members, music industry groups, provincial and federal
government departments and agencies and with stakeholders whose missions complement that of CIMA;
maintains effective relationships with independent music industry associations, festivals and events
within the international community.
VI. Monitors and analyzes the regulatory environment and cultural policies that impact on the independent
music sector; prepares official responses and recommends approaches to be taken; presents CIMA
position(s) in public forums.
VII. Takes a strategic approach to identifying and managing emerging complex issues which continue to
impact on the independent sector.
VIII. Oversees fundraising planning and implementation, identifying potential sources, establishing strategies
to approach funders, overseeing proposals and fundraising records and documentation.
IX. Represents the association to other organizations as well as to the media and public at large.
- Strong leader with vision as to the future development of the music industry
- Team builder
- Familiarity with the Canadian media and entertainment sector
- Knowledge of the broadcast industry and especially the radio sector
- Knowledge of the Canadian regulatory system vis‐à‐vis the music industry
- Knowledge of intellectual property rights issues
- The ability to work with a board of directors and membership who have diverse interests
Strategic thinker and vision to provide the board of directors with options and solutions as technology continues to change the music industry
- Exceptional written, verbal and presentation skills
- Strong negotiation skills with the drive to produce results
- Flexibility in working hours and ability to travel is required
- Bilingualism would be an asset
