2010 WIJBF Performer: James Hurley & James Wylie

June 7, 2010

Saturday July 17, @ Yellow Belly Brewery, 8:00-9:00pm

James Hurley and James Wylie met while completing Masters of Music Degrees at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. James Hurley, from St. John’s Newfoundland, graduated from NEC with a Masters in Classical Piano performance in May 2010. While at NEC his primary studies were with Georgian pianist Alexander Korsantia, although he also immersed himself in the Jazz and Improvisation departments, bringing him into contact with many of the finest educators and students of the idiom. It was here he met James Wylie, a saxophonist/clarinetist/composer born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand who graduated from NEC at the same time with a Masters in Jazz Performance. His projects and musical interests include the investigation of microtonality and its application to the saxophone, overtones and “just” intonation systems and developing an improvisational language for solo saxophone performance. He has studied with Anthony Coleman, George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, John McNeil, Frank Gratkowski, Hayden Chisholm, Allan Chase, Cecil McBee, Bill McHenry, Tony Malaby and Chris Cheek. He has performed locally and internationally with Sam Rivers, Wayne Shorter, Anthony Coleman, Bob Moses, Cecil McBee, Frank Carlberg, Miles Crayford, Jack Wilkins, Ken Schaphorst, Douglas Yates, Alex Heitlinger and Randy Pingrey and has been involved in collaborations with award winning theatre company “Company 1” in Boston. Together, the musicians have performed duet improvisations which span many traditions and styles in the Boston area. They are continually developing a strong musical language in the free improvisation idiom.
