Hearts for Haiti Raises $18,000

February 22, 2010

It started with a simple facebook message.  Five days later, Spirit of Newfoundland had organized an amazing series of fundraiser events, featuring over 50 performances at the Masonic Temple spread out from January 27th to 31st.

Hearts for Haiti has raised $18,000 to aid in the relief effort, Spirit of Newfoundland reported in a press release on February 8th. That figure will be matched by the Federal Government, which results in a total of $36,000 to be distributed in Haiti mainly though the Red Cross.

Wreckhouse Jazz & Blues played an important role in making this event a success. Our own Executive / Artistic Director Kirk Newhook sat on the Hearts for Haiti Relief Fund Committee, and participated by coordinating the performances on January 29th and 30th.

Wreckhouse also had a great volunteer presence during all the events – Bill Hunt, Bill Tizzard and Jennifer Gorman helped out managing the stage. Other WJB volunteers on hand included Brad Lambert, Siobhan Foley, and Pamela Thorne. Thanks to all the volunteers who contributed to Hearts for Haiti’s success!

Congratulations to Spirit of Newfoundland for their devotion to this cause, and to the arts community for their support and participation
